Halloween is the perfect time to step outside your usual routine. You might spend the evening taking your children trick-or-treating around Amarillo, attend a costume party or head to a haunted house for a frightening experience. Whatever your plans include, it’s worth thinking about how much noise your ears will encounter.
Hearing loss and tinnitus are not the kinds of spooky surprises anyone wants. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can protect your hearing this Halloween.
Hearing Protection Tips

Employ the following three hearing protection tips:
- Lower party music. Playing songs at an excessive volume can make conversation difficult and encourage everyone to speak louder, increasing the noise throughout the room. If you are planning a party, think about how the music will affect your guests. Keeping the volume below 85 dB is a useful starting point. You can also create a dedicated dance floor with music and leave another part of the home quieter for guests who want to socialize. When you attend a party, notice whether the sound feels uncomfortable or makes conversation difficult. Try moving farther from the speakers or taking a break somewhere quieter.
- Jazz up your costume with earplugs. You do not have to avoid every noisy Halloween event to protect your hearing. Wearing appropriate hearing protection can help reduce the amount of sound entering your ears. Earplugs are easy to carry and can be useful at costume parties, haunted houses and other crowded celebrations.
- Avoid exposure to frighteningly loud sound effects. The loud noises inside haunted houses are designed to make you jump. Unfortunately, repeated exposure to loud screams, sudden bangs and booming effects can also put stress on your hearing. Wear earplugs and limit your haunted house visits to no more than a few times a year.
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders reports that around 6% of American adults younger than 70 have noise-induced hearing loss affecting at least one ear. Protecting your hearing now can help reduce the risk of problems later.
Schedule a Hearing Test
After your Halloween fun, pay attention to how your ears feel. Ringing, buzzing or muffled hearing may occur after loud noise exposure and should not be dismissed. If these changes continue, contact Amarillo Hearing Clinic for a hearing test.
