Approximately 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from hearing aids. Getting your first pair of in-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids is exciting, but it also comes with responsibility. Cleaning your devices with a cleaning kit is an important step in ensuring they continue to provide clear speech and let you hear laughter and singing birds at Memorial Park.
Let’s take a look at the ITE hearing aid cleaning process to help you get started on the right foot.
What’s in a Cleaning Kit?
Cleaning kits typically include a wax removal brush and pick, tube and vent cleaner, battery door opener and battery replacement magnet.
How to Clean Your Devices
Follow these steps for daily cleaning:
- Brush away debris. Using the brush tool, gently brush the outer casing and microphone cover. This helps remove any built-up earwax, dust or debris that could interfere with sound quality.
- Wipe down the surface. Take a soft, dry cloth and carefully wipe down the hearing aid. This keeps the surface clean and prevents oil or moisture from building up.
- Remove visible wax. If you notice any earwax lodged in the crevices or around the openings, use the wax pick to dislodge and remove it gently. Be careful not to push wax further inside.
- Clean the vent. Insert the vent cleaner through one end of the vent and guide it out the other side. This helps push out any wax or debris blocking airflow or affecting performance.
Extra Cleaning Tips
When cleaning your devices, consider these tips for an extra-thorough clean:
- Wash your hands before cleaning
- Check earmolds for discoloration and change when needed
- If your hearing aids have disposable batteries, clean the inside of the battery compartment with the soft brush when changing them
How Often Should I Clean My Hearing Aids?
You should clean your hearing aids daily to prevent wax buildup and minimize bacteria. In addition to regular cleanings, you should schedule a professional cleaning and service appointment every six months or so.
During the cleaning and service appointment, your hearing aid specialist will deep clean your devices and check their programming to ensure they work well for you. This is the perfect time to bring up concerns about your devices or their programming.
